As the new year approaches, some people are hesitant to make a resolution to quit smoking. The price of the packet, which will increase from 50 cents to 1 euro depending on the brand on January 1st, will probably convince some. The pack of Marlboro - the best-selling in France - will thus increase to 12.50 euros. Announced last week, these new prices for cigarettes may have come as a surprise to the most informed smokers.
Indeed, when the government presented its tobacco plan, it had instead planned that packets would pass the 12 euro mark in 2025. Even more disconcerting, Élisabeth Borne, in September, said that the government did not want to increase the tax on tobacco in 2024. "We increased the tax on tobacco this year and we don't plan to increase it next year," the premier said. In reality, this announcement was about a possible "additional" increase in tobacco taxation.
