"Took part in the sedition": Maine County election commission officials announced Thursday night that former U.S. President Donald Trump will be disqualified from running in the 2024 presidential election in the state. The announcement comes after he was disqualified from running in Colorado last week.
The basis for the disqualification is the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which allows anyone who calls for sedition to be barred from running because of Trump's role in the Jan. 6, 2021, breach of the U.S. Capitol.

The latest development is a victory for Trump's opponents, who argue that constitutional protection is needed in light of the need to protect the United States from undemocratic riots.
"We didn't come to this decision easily," said Maine Secretary of State Shona Balwes (Democrat). "Democracy is in danger. It has yet happened that a Secretary of State has disqualified a running candidate in an election on the basis of the 14th Amendment. However, a presidential candidate has never taken part in sedition."
The Colorado Supreme Court last week disqualified former President Donald Trump from running for reelection because of his role in the Jan. 2021, <>, breach of the U.S. Capitol.
For now, the disqualification applies only to the Colorado Republican primary, not the presidential election itself.
