More than two years after Shalev Yishai, now 20, from Tel Aviv, ran over 64-year-old cyclist Dr. David Loyel to death and fled the scene, he was indicted today (Tuesday) for causing death by careless driving and aggravated abandonment, with a plea bargain in which the prosecution will not demand more than two years in prison.

According to the indictment, about twenty minutes before Friday ran over Loyal, he was driving on Route 431, from west to east. During the ride, he did not keep his distance from a taxi that was driving in front of him, crashed into it and hit it from behind. It was agreed between him and the taxi driver that he would withdraw 1,400 shekels to repair the taxi, and the two drove to the mall first, where Yishai withdrew money, handed it to the taxi driver and continued on his way.
After handing over the money, Yishai continued driving on Nim Boulevard in Rishon LeZion, towards Kalman Shore Street. At the time, Loyal, who was training for the Ironman competition, was riding his bicycle. The indictment states that Yishai did not notice him, crashed into him forcefully and slammed him onto the roof of the vehicle, and from there to the road. He did not provide assistance and fled the scene to his girlfriend's house in Ramle, and went to sleep.

The MDA team evacuated Loyal to Assaf Harofeh Hospital suffering from multiple systemic injuries. A short time later, he succumbed to his wounds. Later that day, when Yishai realized that the police were looking for him, he showed up at the station and turned himself in.
As stated, the prosecution reached a lenient plea bargain with him more than two years after the case, in which he is charged with causing death by careless driving and aggravated aggravated injury. Yesterday, a representative of the prosecution said that as part of the arguments for the sentence, the prosecution will seek to impose a prison sentence of 24 months on the defendant, and will ask for an actual disqualification sentence of 12 years, while the defense is free in its arguments for punishment.

The late Dr. Leviel, who was a dentist, is considered a well-known figure in the world of Israeli endurance, and he completed 12 "Israman" competitions, Israel's Ironman competition. About a year before he was killed, he finished first in his age category. For several decades, he incorporated sports into his life, and participated in more than one hundred and fifty competitions in Israel and around the world, including: the Berlin Marathon, the Tiberias Marathon, ultramarathons and dozens of triathlons.
A week after he was killed, the 2,200 participants opened the IRONMAN competition with a minute of remembrance as a tribute to the "iron grandfather", Dr. Loyal, who was supposed to participate.
