Highlights: Students paid an impostor to audition on their behalf – and are accused of aiding and abetting impersonation, forgery and fraudulent receipt. Eight students who registered for a compulsory English test for undergraduates, wanted to save themselves the trouble – and offered another student to take the test instead of them. This, for her part, after making sure that her appearance was similar to that of the examinees on their identity cards, was tested and pocketed thousands of shekels. Quite a few students were willing to give up a test that tests their knowledge of English, but there are those who found an easy way to pass the test: pay another student to impersonate them and take the English proficiency tests at various academic institutions on their behalf.

According to a recent indictment, eight female students aged 23-19, residents of Beit Shemesh, Jerusalem, Beitar Ilit and Sderot, did what they did, and are now accused of aiding and abetting impersonation, forgery and fraudulent receipt.

The eight – who in 2022-2023 studied at various academic institutions, and were obligated to take the national English proficiency test for undergraduate students (the AMIRAM test) – are accused of registering separately for the AMIRAM exams, but instead of taking the test themselves, another student was tested on their behalf, fraudulently and under falsification, for a fee of thousands of shekels that was transferred to her.

The impostor's name passed by word of mouth among female students, including the accused, as someone willing to take the test fraudulently on behalf of the others for a fee. The defendants, separately, contacted her and asked her to take the fraudulent test instead. The latter used to explain to them that the chances of her being perceived as an impostor were low, since the level of checking examinees' identities was low.

After finding that there was a basic similarity between her own appearance and the photo of the examinees on her ID card, the impostor agreed with the students on the details of the test and the payment – and took the test instead.

At the same time as these students, the impostor herself received a notice from the State Prosecutor's Office stating that she was being considered, subject to a hearing, on suspicion of offenses of impersonation, forgery and fraudulent receipt.
