Utah police are investigating the death of a 30-year-old man who died Monday after apparently being sucked into the engine of a plane at Salt Lake City International Airport.

According to an airport spokesperson, the man managed to enter the secure area through one of the emergency exits, ran to the southern end of the airport's western runway, where the planes were being serviced by various aircraft, and crawled into the engine of a Delta Air Lines plane, which was not operating. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and found the man unconscious and had nothing left to do but pronounce him dead. "At this time, it is unclear what injuries caused the man's death," the spokeswoman said.

The man was later identified as Kyler Eppinger, a resident of Park City, Utah, who was in possession of a plane ticket to Denver. Police arrived at the airport around 22 p.m. local time after the manager of one of the shops called police to report a passenger who had rioted, but it was not yet clear exactly what happened in that incident.

After Eppinger exited one of the airport's emergency exits and entered the secure area, officers found his personal belongings on one of the runways, including his clothes and shoes. About 10 minutes after the search began, airport workers reported to officers that they had located the passenger near the engine, who were asked by the officers to ask the pilot to turn off the plane's engines. Eppinger himself was found unconscious while the plane's engines were apparently still running, an issue that is still under police investigation, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Police intend to dissect his body to determine the circumstances of his death.
