Munich – With a largely peaceful and festive New Year's Eve celebration, Munich has slipped into the year 2024. Concerts, events and sporting events: There is a lot on offer in the Bavarian capital again this year. Here's a look at what's coming up in 2024.

Ice show "Holiday on Ice" starts in January with star guest Vanessa Mai

It starts on Thursday, 4 January, with the "Holiday on Ice" ice show. Until Sunday, 7 January, there are eight performances to marvel at in the Olympic Hall. Tickets are still available. The latest production "No Limits" mixes classic figure skating with modern show elements. On its website, the organizer promises "captivating performances by the world's best figure skaters and ice dancers." A guest appearance is made by pop star Vanessa Mai, who sings two of her songs in the show.

European Handball Championship: World Champion Denmark visits Munich's Olympic Hall

Just a few days later, the European Men's Handball Championship will continue. In the Olympic Hall, which is expected to hold around 11,000 spectators at the tournament, twelve preliminary round matches will take place between 11 and 16 January. Among the guests are world champions Denmark, who go into the tournament as one of the top favourites. The Icelanders will also play in Munich. Loud support is expected with the infamous Viking choreography. Bitter news for all Munich handball fans: Unfortunately, the German national team will not play a game in the Isar metropolis.

Operation of the SAP Garden starts: Uli Hoeneß raves about the new Munich sports arena

The SAP Garden, a new sports arena in Munich's Olympic Park, is finally scheduled to go into operation this year. The basketball players of FC Bayern and the ice hockey professionals of EHC Red Bull Munich will find their new home there. The anticipation for the opening after around four and a half years of construction is growing, and the work is nearing completion. "Every sports fan will have a completely new relationship with the sport," enthused Bayern's honorary president Uli Hoeneß at the end of last year. The new arena has a capacity of 10,600 spectators for ice hockey and 11,500 spectators for basketball and is equipped with all kinds of high-tech.

European Football Championship: Opening match between Germany and Scotland takes place in Munich

The biggest sporting highlight in 2024 is undoubtedly the 2024 European Football Championship. The badly battered football giant Germany is hoping for a second summer fairy tale at the home European Championship. Germany's opening match against Scotland, which is also the opening match of the tournament, will take place on Friday, 14 June, from 21 p.m. at the Munich Arena. Three more preliminary round matches, a round of <> and the first of the two semi-finals will be played in Fröttmaning. For all those who did not get a ticket, there will be a public viewing in the fan zone in the Olympic Park.

High-class tennis in Munich: Alexander Zverev comes to the "BMW Open"

Not only football and handball, but also world-class tennis can be seen in the sports city of Munich. From Saturday, 13 April, to Sunday, 21 April, the "BMW Open" will take place in the Isar metropolis on the tennis court in Schwabing-Freimann. With Alexander Zverev and Holger Rune, there are two top ten stars.

A fixture for decades: Auer Dult starts at the end of April

The Auer Dult has been a fixture in Munich for decades. Household goods, antiques and pine cushions: there is something for everyone at the numerous stalls. For nine days, traders offer their products and goods for sale on Mariahilfplatz. Fans of bumper cars and carousels will also get their money's worth. The next Auer Dult will take place from Saturday, April 27 to Sunday, May 5. The Jakobidult will take place from Saturday, July 27 to Sunday, August 4. The season comes to an end with the Kirchweihdult, which is scheduled from Saturday, October 19 to Sunday, October 27.

Lots of big concerts in Munich: Adele is to perform ten times

A lot of big concerts are coming up in Munich from spring onwards. From Metallica to Andreas Gabalier, from Coldplay to Taylor Swift, various music stars perform in the Olympic Stadium. At the start of the European Football Championship, Ed Sheeran is to perform on the Theresienwiese. The crowning glory, however, is undoubtedly Adele: She is to deliver an incredible ten concerts at the exhibition grounds in Riem this year. A selection of concerts:

There is also a lot on offer in 2024: Comedy and cabaret programs in Munich

For some fans, Munich is the secret humor capital of Germany. Many comedy and cabaret highlights are also coming up in 2024. On Tuesday, 8 October, Harry G will perform his programme "Hoam Stories" at the Circus Krone. On Friday, 27 September, Dieter Nuhr can be seen at the same place. Carolin Kebekus will perform on Thursday, September 5, and Friday, September 6.

Folk festivals in Munich: Oktoberfest lasts 16 days this year

Of course, Munich is once again in folk festival fever this year. On Friday, March 1 to Sunday, March 24, the strong beer festival will take place at the Nockherberg. The Spring Festival kicks off on the Theresienwiese from Friday, April 19, to Sunday, May 5. This year's Oktoberfest is 16 days long: "O'zapft is" on Saturday, September 21, and Sunday, October 6, the tents, rides and stalls will close their doors. Several million visitors are expected again.

Harry Potter fans beware: There will be new exhibitions in Munich in 2024

In 2024, Munich offers many special exhibitions. From March, the city will be enriched by a new exhibition. Zurich's Wow Museum is expanding into Munich's city centre. In a multi-mirrored room, fans of illusions will get their money's worth. In May, an exhibition about the magical world of Harry Potter will open in the small Olympic Hall. There will be a pop-up fan shop in the Stachus Passages in the spring.

Not only summer Tollwood: Various music festivals in Munich again this year

There is also something on offer for festival fans this year. The Summer Tollwood in the Olympic Park will take place from Friday, June 21 to Sunday, July 21, 2024. The "Topless Open Air" will take place on July 20, 2024 as usual on Königsplatz. Probably the biggest festival is the "Superbloom": International stars such as Tokio Hotel, Sam Smith, The Chainsmokers will perform in the Olympic Park on the weekend of 7 to 8 September. (vfi)
