At the end of the Raun Nights on Saturday, January 6th, the Penzberger Beaschdn will perform again on the town square in Penzberg - with devils, witches and Mrs. Perchta.
Penzberg - The Penzberg Beaschdn are expected on Saturday at 17.45 p.m. on the town square, to then dance around the fire next to the ice rink. There should be quite a lot of Beashdn this time, especially devils, but also some witches and of course the central figure, the two-faced Mrs. Perchta.
Board member Kai Strecker expects 30 to 35 active members for the performance on Saturday (originally planned for Friday), including stewards. According to him, there will also be a good dozen children and young people behind the masks, who will also perform a dance. Like last year, there will probably be a Gastpercht, an Ardinger Turmdeife from Erding. The mask wearer is a Penzberger.
Old custom for the winter solstice
The Beaschdn had already performed in December at the Glentleiten open-air museum and in Lenggries. The Perchten – in Penzberg they are called Beaschdn – is an old custom on the winter solstice. Despite their gruesome appearance, they are considered to bring good luck and souls, protecting the house and farm from bad luck and driving away the evil spirits of winter. This is also expressed by the call of the Penzberg Beaschdn: "Beaschdn samma, schützen damma."
Penzberger Beaschdn celebrate their 40th anniversary this year
This year the club celebrates its 40th anniversary. It was founded in 1984 by Max Gruber (who died 18 years ago). Gruber carved almost 290 masks himself, including Penzberg's special features, the Mooskoppen and Bergmandl, for which there are currently no mask wearers – just like for the Schönperchten.
