An 80-year-old man floated helplessly in the Isar until a passer-by intervened. The young soldier did not hesitate and jumped after him.
Munich – On Thursday, January 4, a dramatic incident occurred on the Isar River in Munich. An 80-year-old man was discovered by passers-by floating helplessly in the river. Thanks to the courageous intervention of a 22-year-old soldier and lifeguard of the German Bundeswehr, worse could be prevented, as reported by the Munich Fire Department.
At around 16:30 p.m., the emergency services of the Munich Fire Department were called to the Max-Joseph-Bridge. Passers-by had noticed an elderly gentleman in the water, who was obviously in distress.

The 22-year-old passer-by recognized the situation and acted immediately. As an experienced ice swimmer, he did not hesitate, jumped into the Isar and swam after the helpless man. At the height of Thomas-Mann-Allee, he was able to reach the 80-year-old and, with the help of other passers-by, pull him ashore.

After the rescue operation, the senior was met by the crew of an emergency ambulance. He was severely hypothermic and was immediately transported to the trauma room of a Munich clinic. So far, it is unclear how and why the elderly gentleman had ended up in the Isar. The fire brigade has no information on this.
