The security cabinet meeting exploded after a sharp confrontation between several ministers and IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevy, a source familiar with the details said Friday. According to the source, Ministers Regev, Ben-Gvir, and Muslim began attacking the chief of staff, claiming that he was appointing "people behind the disengagement" to investigate the events of October 7. Gantz intervened and attacked the ministers: "This is a professional investigation, what does it have to do with the disengagement and the concept?"
According to the source, during the cabinet meeting, Minister Miri Regev was updated on media reports according to which IDF Chief of Staff and former Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz would be appointed a member of the team to investigate the events of October 7. Following the report, Ministers Regev, Amsalem and Ben-Gvir attacked the IDF chief of staff, claiming that "the people behind the disengagement plan are being appointed for investigation."

The source noted that Chief of Staff Halevy tried to explain to the ministers that this was a tactical debriefing that would be used by the IDF to continue the fighting and draw military lessons, and not a systematic investigation into the failures of October 7. According to the source, Defense Minister Galant tried to silence the ministers who attacked the chief of staff and said he backed Halevy.
At a certain point, Minister Ben-Gvir began to talk about the concept in which he claimed the army was a prisoner and about the disengagement plan. At this point, Minister Benny Gantz followed suit, interrupted him and shouted at him and the other ministers who attacked the chief of staff.

"This is a professional investigation, what is the connection to the disengagement and the concept? Chief of Staff is investigating what happened now in order to serve the goals of the war and our ability to prepare for a confrontation in the north. This is not a national investigation," Gantz attacked. The source noted that at this stage, loud shouting exchanges began between the ministers and Netanyahu decided to dissolve the meeting.
