Captain Harel Itach, 19, from Ra'anana, fell at the end of last month after being wounded in battle in the southern Gaza Strip, and for nearly a week doctors fought for his life until he died of his wounds. Many acquaintances and relatives came to accompany him on his final journey, including fighters and subordinates, some of whom even arrived wounded, but one dog was also present in the crowd, which opened the door to a special rescue story - which shed light on the fighter and the person Harel was.
"Despite his injuries, Harel insisted on fighting with the team in Gaza," said Omar Itach, Harel's brother. "On one of the days of fighting, almost two months ago, when they were fighting in the Shati camp, they found a stray dog, a German shepherd. She was starving and basically for ten days she was with them and he gave her some of the food he had."

Omer says that his brother has always loved dogs, so it only made sense that he would take care of her - and give her a name very similar to the dog waiting for him at home: "Shetty", after the refugee camp where they found her, and very similar to "Chucky", the home dog of the Itah family. "He managed to transfer her in their APC to an animal hospital in Israel through a veterinarian who is also reservists who fought in the Gaza Strip."
When she arrived in Israel, the dog was transferred to the spouse of a sting fighter who was with them, and from there to his new owner. At the end of last month, after the casualty officer told Itach's family the worst news of all, his mother asked to find Shetty, and indeed - the dog's owner brought her to the funeral and later to the shiva.
