Warming on the Korean Peninsula: North Korea launched a large artillery barrage of more than 200 shells and rockets toward the maritime border with the South on the country's western coast.
In response, Seoul ordered residents on three islands along the maritime border to go to shelters. Subsequently, an announcement was issued regarding the partial evacuation of residents of the three islands. So far, there have been no casualties and no damage has been caused. South Korea's state news agency Yonhap reported that all the shells fired fell into the sea.
In response to what Seoul called a "provocation," the South Korean military launched a firing exercise near the maritime border area to show readiness to fire in the event of a North Korean attempt to strike South Korean territory.
This is the first event of its kind since 2018, when an agreement was signed fixing the maritime border between the two countries. Until the agreement was signed, North Korea used to shell the border area, and in some cases villages on islands near the border strip were damaged.
