Netanyahu's government is commenting on the end of the war in Israel. How to deal with the Gaza Strip? Right-wing ministers want to repopulate the area.

Jerusalem – The war in Israel and Gaza is still in full swing. Every day there are reports of new fighting between the Israeli army and the terrorist militia Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The ongoing fighting is causing great suffering, especially among the Palestinian population. In the midst of the war, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government is now announcing plans for the post-war period.

Right-wing extremist ministers in the Israeli government are said to have spoken out in favor of a resettlement of the Palestinian territories, reports the editorial network Germany (rnd), among others. There is resistance to this all over the world. Germany, France and the United States have sharply criticized the statement. Opposition also came from the Israeli government itself.

Hamas competition as the new government in the Gaza Strip?

Israel's defense minister, Yoaw Galant, had firmly rejected the demands of far-right ministers. "There will be no presence of Israeli civilians in the Gaza Strip after the war aims have been achieved," he said on Thursday. Galant's idea is that Palestinian groups that are not hostile to Israel should take control of the coastal region, reports RND.

It remains unclear who these groups are supposed to be. If the United States had its way, the Palestinian Authority (PA) should take control of the Gaza Strip. The authority is dominated by the Palestinian organization Fatah. Since some Fatah representatives are said to have expressed sympathy for Hamas' attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, Netanyahu rejects this idea.

Netanyahu urges solution to conflict with Hezbollah militia

However, the war is not limited to the fighting between Israel and Hamas. The situation has also escalated on the border with neighbouring Lebanon. Israeli soldiers and members of the Hezbollah militia regularly engage in fighting, causing numerous casualties on both sides. The killing of a Hamas leader in the Lebanese capital Beirut could mean a further escalation of the conflict. Hezbollah blames Israel for the killing and vowed to take revenge.

Netanyahu wants to work out a solution to the border conflict at a meeting with US envoy Amos Hochstein, reports rnd. Hochstein also acts as a mediator and is supposed to help evacuated Israeli citizens return to their homes in the border area with Lebanon. A "fundamental change" is needed, Netanyahu said on Thursday. Israel wants to rely on a diplomatic solution to the border conflict. (nhi)
