Tesla breaks the sales record in the fourth quarter of 2023 - but loses its status as the world's largest electric car manufacturer. Chinese rival BYD has passed by.
Austin/Shenzhen - The competition for the global electric car crown has a new frontrunner: Tesla has lost market leadership in the electric car segment and was no longer the world's largest electric car manufacturer in the fourth quarter of 2023.
Although billionaire Elon Musk's U.S. company set a new record for deliveries, it has ceded the top position to Chinese rival BYD.
Tesla is no longer the largest electric car manufacturer - rival BYD is passing by
Tesla delivered 484,507 vehicles in the last three months of last year, while its competitor from China reported a whopping 526,409 cars sold with pure electric drives.
While Tesla only offers BEV models, BYD also offers alternative drive variants: In addition to pure electric cars, BYD sold hundreds of thousands of combustion engines and more than 400,000 plug-in hybrids in the fourth quarter. Despite the loss of market leadership, Tesla also has reason to celebrate:

Tesla: Despite sales record in Q4 2023, Chinese manufacturer passes by
In the fourth quarter, the electric car pioneer was able to set a sales record, because never before have so many cars been delivered: Tesla's sales figures were about 11 percent higher than in the previous, third quarter.
Over the whole year, BYD sold more than three million cars, of which 1.6 million were purely electric cars. In this category and over the whole year, Tesla was still ahead with 1.8 million in 2023.

In Germany, meanwhile, vehicles of the BYD brand - despite high ambitions - are still rarely seen on the roads: According to statistics from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), just over 4100 vehicles of the Chinese manufacturer were newly registered last year - this means less than one percent of the total number of new electric car registrations.
