For 950 years, the Augustinian monastery of Rottenbuch has been a supra-regional centre of the Christian faith. On the occasion of this anniversary, Mayor Markus Bader invited to a ceremony in the Rottenbuch town hall.

Rottenbuch – The Rottenbuch town hall was bursting at the seams when Mayor Markus Bader opened the ceremony for the 950th anniversary of the Augustinian monastery. In addition to the auxiliary bishop and other dignitaries, representatives of politics were also present.

By the way: Everything from the region is also available in our regular Schongau newsletter. And in our Weilheim-Penzberg newsletter.

In his opening speech, the mayor spanned the arc from the Augustinian doctrine of time to the year 2073, when the monastery will celebrate its 1000th birthday. "I hope that I can still be there as a former mayor," he smiled.

Sundial as a gift

In a positive sense, the sundial of the Augustinian canon Eusebius Merle, which was presented to the congregation on the occasion of the anniversary, has also fallen out of time. "The watch is designed in such a way that it only works in Rottenbuch," Bader remarked, and was pleased: "I couldn't have wished for a better gift."

In the subsequent lecture entitled "The eventful history of Rottenbuch Monastery from the Middle Ages to the early modern period", keynote speaker Dr. Johann Pörnbacher from the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities shed some light on the early history of the monastery. He emphasized in particular the fidelity of the canons to the essence of the Christian faith.

Expelled bishops found refuge in Rottenbuch

"Even Bishop Altmann of Passau, at whose request the monastery was founded, was considered an advocate of a church freed from venality and worldly influences," says Pörnbacher. So it is hardly surprising that many bishops who were expelled in the course of the investiture controversy found refuge in Rottenbuch.

From the very beginning, the monks there maintained contacts with various reform monasteries abroad, which did not necessarily endear them to the ruling nobles. In this context, the protection privilege granted by the Hohenstaufen Konradin marked a turning point.

In the High Middle Ages, the monastery had to contend with looting and fires, even the 67-metre-high tower once collapsed. In the course of its renovation, Provost Georg Neumair had an inscription erected in 1439 as a memento, which has remained legible to this day. However, the tower did not acquire its distinctive classicist form until centuries later.

Final word incumbent on Böbing's mayor

"The Canons' Monastery was a space filled by people whose ambition was to anchor Christianity in the region and to carry it forward. That is still our task today," said Pörnbacher, summarizing the eventful history of the Rottenbuch monastery.

However, the final word on this special day belonged to Peter Erhard, the mayor of the neighbouring municipality of Böbing. He had thought long and hard about what to give his "neighbor" for the festive occasion, according to Erhard. "You've had enough beer and wine," he said in the direction of Markus Bader. "With a community umbrella, I risk that the mayor of Rottenbuch will advertise the municipality of Böbing while walking through the Wildsteig. So I'll buy you a European beech."

However, it will not be planted until next spring.
