The first graduates of the new nursing training program have their degrees in their pockets. Margit Schmid, head of the vocational school for nursing in Munich, takes stock of the new generalist nursing training.
Munich - The first nursing students of the generalist training have their diploma in their pockets. Margit Schmid, head of the vocational school for nursing in Munich, is proud of her graduates. But also on what the school has achieved in the past three years. The Munich Sisterhood of the BRK was a pioneer in the new training – and had to get started in the middle of the lockdown.
New nursing training in Munich: Profession has become more attractive according to headmistress
The first cohort has completed the new generalist nursing training. How many of your students passed?
All of our first three classes. That's a great rate. 14 of our students even received a state prize for special achievements, which means that in the third year of training they had an average grade across all subjects that was better than 1.5.
Were there any dropouts?
The dropout rate is very low. In 2023, it will be 8.5 percent at our school.
What is your impression, has the new training made the nursing profession more attractive?

Yes, I think so. With this training, you can work in all areas. For example, in long-term care, outpatient or inpatient care, pediatrics. Nurses are able to think outside the box because they are confronted with all areas during their training.

Training at the Munich Vocational School: Insight into areas such as geriatric care and paediatrics
Geriatric care fears that most of them will decide to work in a hospital after completing their training. Is that true?
Rather, the figures show that there is little change. Those who train at a former geriatric nursing school are more likely to stay in the field of long-term care afterwards. We have more inpatient providers, our students are more likely to stay in clinics. And of course, the decision also depends on the general conditions.
A frequently voiced criticism of the new training is that although the pupils are broadly positioned, they do not learn in depth enough.
At our school, we have nursing educators from all areas, so we can offer all qualifications in theoretical lessons. Our students complete 1300 to 1400 hours of pediatrics through a cooperation with the Hauner Children's Hospital. In other words, they learn in depth how to deal with sick children. It may be that this is more difficult in rural areas because the paediatric places are not available.
Our students are able to think outside the box because they are exposed to all areas of nursing during their training.

Where do you see room for improvement in generalist training?
We are currently in the process of evaluating the first three years. For this purpose, we have also introduced an online question tool for our students. For example, some have told us that anatomy lessons have been neglected. But that was before the final exam – often there is fear behind it. When we started preparing the lessons in 2020, we could not yet foresee what the third year of training would look like. We can now fine-tune the curriculum even better. In addition, the practical framework conditions for training must be optimised.
Munich school wins care prize endowed with 10,000 euros
Her school has been awarded the Nursing Prize by the City of Munich. What do you do better than others?
I submitted the application for the prize because I know what we have achieved in recent years. We were pioneers and one of the first schools in Bavaria to offer the new training. It all started in April 2020 – during the first lockdown. We had a harder time with it than many others. In addition, we had to redesign the lessons, and it was not possible to consult with other schools. Our school offers, among other things, a focus on pediatrics and has a state-of-the-art simulation laboratory. Nevertheless, it was of course a great surprise that we won the first prize.
How will you use the prize money of 10,000 euros?
The money will go to the school. We will continue to modernize the simulation lab, offer more advanced training, and also plan to train learning coaches.
