Chabad Hasidim clashed Tuesday at the Chabad compound in Brooklyn, near the Lubavitcher Rebbe's home, after NYPD forces arrived to seal a tunnel discovered there with cement. At least ten people were arrested at the scene.
The tunnel was dug by the organization's followers during the Corona period in order to freely reach the Rebbe's house, which is located near the compound. For some Hasidim, the tunnels are a way to expand the compound, something of religious importance to them.
Rabbi Yehuda Krinetsky, on behalf of the Chabad headquarters, issued a statement saying: "The Chabad community is pained by the vandalism perpetrated by a group of young agitators who caused damage to the synagogue below the Chabad headquarters on Eastern Parkway Street. These brazen acts will be investigated and the sanctity of the synagogue will be restored."
"We thank the NYPD officers for their professional and sensitive conduct during this incident. We thank the public for their concern and support for the Chabad community and its institutions around the world," it said.
