Easier to build than a garage, the carport is quick and easy to install. However, its construction may require administrative procedures with the public services.
Installing a carport: what do the regulations say?
In general, for any construction of a carport on your land, you must apply for planning permission from your town hall, unless the surface area is less than 5m². In detail, the regulations may vary depending on your area of residence. Indeed, if it is considered a protected site, or to be preserved, classified or close to a historical monument, the procedure will be more complex.
In addition, you should know that according to the Local Urban Plan - PLU -, the location of your carport determines whether your carport is considered a new construction or an extension. The rules that are most often applied are as follows:
- For a self-supporting carport that is considered a new construction:
- For a carport attached to your home and considered as an extension:
In any case, before embarking on the construction of your carport, contact your town hall directly to find out exactly what rules apply to your case and your sector.

As seen above, the location of your carport can be decisive in whether or not you obtain your building permit from the urban planning department of your town hall. Thus, leaning against your house, the carport is considered an extension of your home. If this is not the case, it is considered a new construction.
Apart from the regulatory aspect of where your shelter will be installed, also think about its practical aspect: identify the most appropriate available space for your project, provide easy access for you and your vehicle and anticipate the planting or growth of the plants in your garden. Finally, check with your town hall to find out the minimum distances to be respected from your neighbourhood.
Which materials to choose for your carport?
- Wood: Wood is a material with a timeless charm that blends beautifully into a green natural setting. While its price may seem attractive, be sure to choose a good quality autoclave wood to limit too much maintenance;
- PVC: PVC carports are weather-resistant and easy to maintain, a simple wipe with a sponge is enough. They are available in a wide range of colours, so they can be elegantly matched to the facades of houses;
- Aluminum: aluminum carports are solid and do not deform over time. Their design lines blend perfectly with modern homes and aesthetically enhance the most traditional ones.
