Disney archives officials say that in 1930, a man waited for Walt Disney outside a Los Angeles hotel to make him a proposal. He was willing to pay her $300 in cash for the right to reproduce one of her drawings on the cover of notebooks. The sketch in question: that of a mouse that appeared a few years earlier in the animated short film Steamboat Willie, directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks. Running out of cash, Disney immediately agreed. This was the beginning of the exploitation of Mickey Mouse, a character who has since accompanied an infinite number of products over several generations. But since January 1st, the most famous rodent is now free.
