The abdication of Queen Margrethe II was unexpected. Her son also found out about the royal changes this year very late.
Copenhagen – Denmark's Queen Margrethe II (83) announced her abdication on December 31 in her traditional New Year's address. However, this news seemed to come out of nowhere. Not only were the people caught off guard by the news, but the royal successor was apparently also taken by surprise.
Queen Margrethe II abdicates: Prince Frederik is facing a rather spontaneous change of throne
Prince Frederik (55) is now to be crowned on January 14. "I can confirm that Queen Margrethe informed both the Crown Prince and Prince Joachim of the decision on December 28," Lene Balleby, the head of the royal family's communications department, told the newspaper "Berlingske". In other words, just a few days before the public announcement.
Nothing more detailed was revealed about the reasons and circumstances of the abdication. Only the queen's old age is suspected. Still, it is surprising that the Queen did not inaugurate her family sooner. After all, the whole royal family had spent Christmas together a few days earlier.

However, the fact that the Queen knows how to surprise is not new. It was only in September 2022 that she had stripped the children of Prince Joachim (54) of their royal titles - and apparently without any warning.

However, the current abdication is now on everyone's lips and will take place on Sunday afternoon at Christiansborg Palace. Following this, Prince Frederik and his wife Princess Mary (51) will be declared King and Queen of Denmark. But why is Queen Margaret abdicating now? Sources used: Berlingske, t-online.de
