When Queen Margrethe II hands over the sceptre to her son Frederik, a lot will change for Prince Christian as well.
Copenhagen - On Sunday (14 January 2024), Denmark's Queen Margrethe II (52), who has reigned for 83 years, will abdicate. Her son Frederik (55) will be the new king and his eldest son Christian (18) will be the new crown prince. A fact that will change a lot for the 18-year-old.
Christian of Denmark: More official duties and responsibilities as crown prince
Historian and royal expert Lars Hovbakke Sørensen has answered the Danish magazine "Seoghoer.dk" what the new role as crown prince will entail for Christian – whose full name is Christian Valdemar Henri John, Prince of Denmark, Count of Monpezat. Thus, the new title will put Christian more in the spotlight. Among other things, this will also entail the obligation to perform many official duties. His grandmother Margrethe, on the other hand, is expected to take it a little easier, even if she won't disappear completely from the public eye.
In addition, Prince Christian will follow in his father's footsteps in the Council of State. He will then be a permanent member after 14 January. If the future King Frederik, who in earlier years was afraid of becoming regent, is abroad, the future Crown Prince Christian will rule Denmark. A great and responsible task that awaits the young heir to the throne.
Christian of Denmark: New role as crown prince and apanage for the 18-year-old
In addition, Prince Christian will reportedly get apanage. Non-ruling members of a princely house receive apanage in the form of money or real estate for basic services befitting their status. Actually, Prince Christian was supposed to get it at the age of 21, unless he would become crown prince before - which is happening now.

Otherwise, the sports-loving Christian will probably do his A-levels first. He is currently attending a high school and care is expected to be taken to ensure that this does not fade into the background despite official appointments. Is his mother outstripping his father? The Danes call her "King Mary". (cso)Sources used: seoghoer.dk, adelswelt.de
