Since 2023, there has been one less McDonald's branch in Munich. A long-time visitor reacts particularly emotionally.

Munich – With his message, Tobias B. has triggered a flood of comments on Facebook. "It's a real shock right now," he wrote in his much-discussed article. What B. announced in the Facebook group "Munich in the past vs. today"? The closure of the McDonald's branch in Fürstenrieder Straße. It is obviously a concern for many of the inhabitants of Laim.

McDonald's location in Munich closed for "strategic reasons"

"I moved to Laim in 1983 and went to the Fürstenried school across the street from 1985. You can imagine how many times I've been in there," reads the posting, in which B. also shows a farewell letter on the front door from December 2023. At the request of our editors, McDonald's confirms the end of one of the oldest branches in the city: "We have permanently closed our restaurant location in Fürstenrieder Straße for strategic reasons."

For him, an "era in Laim" is coming to an end, reports B. in an exchange with our editors. Why is he reacting so emotionally to the closure? He associates the branch in Fürstenrieder Strasse with very special childhood memories, explains the Munich native. "From the 6th grade onwards, I was always allowed to go home after school and no longer had to go to after-school care. Once a week I got money for two apple turnovers for 'lunch'. That was always a highlight."

The branch was a "student institution"

Other Facebook users share their personal experiences under the post, sometimes with curious insights. "I was there a lot back then. First ice skating in Pasing, then with the girls for a cheeseburger with fries and coke. That was all there was to it. It was a great time," one commented. The branch has been a "student institution" for years, it is said. Several schools are within walking distance.

In addition, there are quite a few Munich residents on Facebook who have coped much better with the end. "As far as I'm concerned, they could close all the branches. This is pure poison for the body," one user positioned. In the U.S., a court ruling recently made headlines for the company. It had to pay 800,000 euros in damages to a young customer who had injured her leg during a visit to the branch.

Currently 24 McDonald's restaurants in Munich

McDonald's recently announced the "fastest growth phase in the history of the brand." By 2027, the number of locations operated worldwide is to be expanded to 50,000 (end of 2023: 40,275). Apparently, the branch in Fürstenrieder Strasse no longer fit into the concept. According to the company, there are currently 24 active restaurants in the Munich city area. "No further closings were implemented in 2023; There were no new openings during this period," a spokesman explained on request.
