LONDON — Nearly seven months ago, Christine Dawood lost her son and husband in a tragic accident. Suleman and Shahzada Dawood were among the five passengers of the submarine "Titan", which imploded during the tour of the Titanic wreck.

'Still can't believe it': Mother of crashed Titanic tourist talks about grief

In a long interview with the British newspaper Daily Mail, the mother now talks about her life after the death of her son and husband. Not a day goes by when she doesn't miss her son, she says in the interview. "It's waking up every morning. Sometimes I still can't believe it. The possibility that the submarine could implode never crossed my mind." Even more tragic: Actually, Christine should have been on board the "Titan". However, she left her ticket to her son because he showed such great interest in the expedition.

While Suleman and Shazada boarded the "Titan" on June 18, Christine and her daughter Alina followed the expedition aboard the Polar Prince, the submarine's escort ship. Almost two hours after the start of the dive in the North Atlantic, the "Titan" lost contact with the escort ship. A race against time began, and several emergency services searched for the capsule for days.

For four days, Christine and Alina waited on board the ship for the return of their loved ones. But in vain. Search teams were only able to recover the wreckage of the aircraft. Until that moment, the 48-year-old still had hope. The certainty was a slap in the face.

After fatal submarine accident: Christine Dawood celebrates the birthday of her dead son

Suleman would have turned 8 on January 20. His mother also bought balloons for him this year, just as she did when he was alive. She celebrates her son's birthday to remember him and his father. Suleman studied economic analysis and human resources at Strathclyde University in Glasgow and intended to work with his father in the family business, on the dive he wanted to set a world record.

The hardest part for Christine is not knowing exactly what happened. The investigation into the case is still ongoing. "But I'm very angry," says the 48-year-old. Even before the dive of the "Titan" there were indications of security gaps and serious technical deficiencies and problems of the submarine. (jus)
