What is the tallest building in the Free State of Bavaria? A little tip: It's a tower, but it's not the Olympic Tower in Munich.
Nuremberg – In Germany, buildings tend to rise moderately: high-rise buildings hardly characterize the landscape of the Federal Republic of Germany – the only exceptions are large cities such as Frankfurt, Hamburg or Munich. In the Bavarian capital, the Olympic Tower is the tallest building and measures 291.3 meters.
But that doesn't mean it's the tallest tower in Bavaria. No, this title is held by another building. Namely the Nuremberg TV Tower, also known as the Nuremberg Egg. It towers over the Olympic Tower by only 1.5 meters, giving it a height of 292.8 meters. According to the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts, it was built between 1977 and 1980.
Bavaria's tallest building stands in Nuremberg: shape reminiscent of an egg
It got its nickname because the tower basket resembles an egg and the architect Erwin Heinle was inspired by the shape of pocket watches: the Nuremberg eggs from the 16th century. In the tower there is not only telecommunications technology, but also a viewing platform and a restaurant. However, these have been closed to the public and tourists since 1991.

In 2021, the TV Tower was included in Bavaria's list of monuments and crowned the tallest building in the Free State. Of course, the certificate of the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments was handed over on the tower, with Prime Minister Markus Söder, among others, taking a selfie from there. He described the Nuremberg egg as "a real piece of home" and "a real highlight for the city of Nuremberg and the monument state of Bavaria".

Seen in Germany, the Nuremberg TV Tower is the third largest building of its kind. Only the Berlin TV Tower with 368 meters and the Europa Tower in Frankfurt am Main with 337.5 meters are ahead of it. (ly)
