Artifact, the news app created by former Instagram founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, was short-lived. The platform, which used an AI-based approach to suggest news that could be of interest to users, will close a year after its launch. At the base of the decision there would be the difficulty in continuing to invest in a project that, despite the members, has not been able to monetize the development efforts. In the style of Reddit, Artifact allowed you to comment on facts and add your own notes, which were shared with other users.
Kevin Systrom, with a post on Medium, said that he wants to continue working in the industry, given the limitless opportunities offered by artificial intelligence. "We live in an exciting time where artificial intelligence is changing just about everything we touch, with countless opportunities for new ideas," he said. Launched exactly one year ago, Artifact was not only an app to receive personalized news but also to receive article summaries, thanks to AI. Its recommendation system favored reading time on certain topics over clicks and comments, to the benefit of valuable stories. Artifact also gave users the opportunity to publish links to share interesting news, with a post publishing function similar to that of X. Systrom recalled that the reading of the contents will be online until the end of February, while the comment section of individual articles and publication of posts is already closed.
