At the moment, a warm weather situation with a lot of rain still dominates the Free State. So that it ends on the weekend – it will be cold and frosty.

Munich – The flood warnings are currently coming thick and fast. At the same time, there are mild temperatures that prevent snow and frost. The reason for this is the recent prevailing westerly weather situation, which has caused a lot of rain and stormy winds, explains meteorologist Dominik Jung at wetternet. But the next major weather situation is already just around the corner – cold air masses are coming to Bavaria from the northeast.

Looking back at the weather year 2023 in Bavaria: Too warm, more precipitation and with devastating storms.

Cold snap in the Free State is imminent - it starts as early as the weekend

Until Friday evening, 5 January, the weather situation in Bavaria will be dominated by decreasing but persistent rain. As far as precipitation is concerned, the weekend will bring cautious relaxation. But not when it comes to the weather in general. Because, as Jung shows in the current wetternet YouTube video, there will be a strong cold snap from Saturday, January 6, to Sunday, January 7. From about five degrees in the plus, it goes to around four to five degrees into the minus, explains the graduate meteorologist.

The German Weather Service (DWD) also predicts that it will be significantly colder until Tuesday, 9 January: "In the night to Tuesday clear in some areas and mostly without precipitation. Minimum temperatures -4 to -10 degrees, severe frost down to -15 degrees in places." But that's not all.

DWD announces "heavy snowfall" in Bavaria for the weekend - with up to 20 centimeters of fresh snow

With the temperatures dropping sharply at the weekend, the rain will turn into snow over a wide area. The DWD writes: "On Saturday, precipitation in the south will turn into heavy snowfall. In the Alps, 10 to 20 cm of fresh snow is possible, at high altitudes squalls and drifts are less likely."

There will also be more "heavy snowfall" in the Alps on Sunday, according to the meteorologists' forecast. At the start of the week, severe frost will come. Jung from wetternet takes the same line: "It will also be colder in the south, and with it heavy snowfall towards Sunday, after that the snow will remain on the ground, it will remain permafrost and that until 19 January". So it's time to replace the rubber boots with the snow shovels again. (FHZ)
