"These people died in abominable conditions, the least we owe them is the truth, frankness and that those prosecuted assume their responsibilities." Philippe Soussi, a lawyer for several civil parties, sets the tone as the trial relating to the deadly floods that caused the death of three residents of a retirement home in Biot, on the French Riviera, opens this Tuesday before the criminal court of Grasse.
Guilaine Debras, the mayor at the time, is on trial for manslaughter "by manifestly deliberate violation of an obligation of safety or prudence", as well as a municipal employee in charge of the municipal safeguarding plan. The director of the nursing home and the company Orpea are being prosecuted on the same charge and for endangering others. All face five years in prison and a fine of 75,000 euros.
