Icy temperatures below freezing: Many bodies of water are covered with a thin layer of ice - but this does not hold, according to the water rescue service.
Freising/Moosburg – What at first glance invites you to go ice skating on the neighboring lake "is extremely dangerous," says Andreas Dörner, 3rd chairman of the Freising Water Rescue Service. He emphasizes that only in a few cases is a body of water frozen so evenly that it can carry people. He urges people to stay away from the waters. The Moosbrug water rescue service also warns against entering the ice rinks. "In order for ice to support a person weighing 75 kilograms, it must be at least ten centimeters thick. Even if it would be thick enough at the edges, that doesn't mean it can carry anywhere," it says in a statement.
Ice rescue exercise for emergencies
In order to prepare for an emergency, the Moosburg water rescue service completed an ice rescue exercise on Sunday. Dressed in wetsuits, the rescuers – secured by lines – went out onto the treacherous ice and practiced rescuing a person who had broken in. The conclusion of the exercise was positive. Nevertheless, it is to be hoped that the emergency services will not be challenged too often this year. pz
