Ben Zucker makes an emotional appearance at the "Schlagerchampions" with Ukrainian women. But when it comes to the choice of words, the pop star makes a mistake.

Berlin – When Florian Silbereisen (42) invites you to his show "Schlagerchampions – The Great Festival of the Best", the name says it all. Whether Helene Fischer (39), Andrea Berg (57), or Beatrice Egli (35), all Schlager greats in the German-speaking world follow the call of the singer and presenter. This time Ben Zucker was also there. The 40-year-old has come up with something very special for his appearance, but caused irritation with a statement.

Ben Zucker chooses inappropriate words against Ukrainian women in "Schlagerchampions"

On Saturday evening (13 January), Zucker sang the peace song "The White Doves Are Tired" by German singer Hans Hartz from 1982 at the Schlager show, which took place again after a three-year break, in the Berlin Velodrome. In the face of numerous conflicts around the world, the message behind them is more relevant than ever. But Zucker didn't sing alone. He was accompanied by singers from Ukraine.

They come from Mukachevo in western Ukraine and took a 20-hour bus ride to perform with the pop singer. The performance was undoubtedly emotional: the arena resembled a sea of lights, the song vividly conveyed the desire for peace.

Ben Zucker's inappropriate saying on "Schlagerchampions": "Don't come down from the world alive anyway"

"You have set an example together here with us at the 'Schlagerchampions'," Silbereisen said afterwards and enthused about "a very special moment". "We, and simply all of us, wish that humanity becomes a little sane again. That would be a great wish."

After the performance, Zucker thanked the Ukrainians and explained why it was so important to him to sing with them. "All I want to say is: We are one world. And we won't get down here alive anyway. That's why I would suggest that we always respect each other and just love each other as much as possible. That's the idea that I think is always the most beautiful," explained Zucker, who also had to deal with a microphone glitch on the show.

What the pop singer says is basically not wrong. After all, everyone dies at some point. But in the context of the Ukraine war and is completely inappropriate, especially with regard to the Ukrainians. The country has been defending itself against the Russian invaders for almost two years now. Almost every day, innocent people die in rocket attacks, soldiers are killed at the front. (mt)
