The whole of Germany is in handball fever. But how did Sunday's European Championship match fare in terms of ratings? After all, the "Tatort" was shown on ARD.

Berlin - The hopes for a winter fairy tale continue: The German handball team has been able to score another victory in the home European Championship. On Sunday (14 January), the team of national coach Alfred Gislason (64) won 34:25 (18:13) against North Macedonia. This means that Germany will certainly make it into the main round. But how did it go in terms of ratings? After all, the "Tatort" was shown on ARD.

European Handball Championship vs. "Tatort": Who won?

In the quota duel, the European Handball Championship had to admit defeat to the crime series. As shown by the DWDL Central Figures, the match was watched by around 7.38 million people on ZDF. This corresponds to a market share of 24.2 percent. A solid result, but one that could have been better.

First place went to the cult crime thriller "Tatort". The new episode "Pyramide" attracted 8.75 million viewers to their TV screens in primetime. As a result, ARD secured a market share of 28.1 percent. Once again, the crime classic was the ratings winner on Sunday evening.

However, if you look at the viewing figures in a more differentiated way, a different picture emerges. ZDF was able to persuade significantly more young viewers to tune in. 2.07 million people between the ages of 14 and 49 were interested in the handball match. On the other hand, only 1.50 million people from the advertising-relevant target group wanted to see "Tatort".

Opening match of the European Handball Championships gave ZDF dream ratings

The European Handball Championships in their own country seem to be met with enthusiasm, especially among the young audience. A total of 10.7 million people tuned in for the opening match against Switzerland last Wednesday (60 January). This put ZDF clearly ahead in the channel comparison. In the advertising-relevant target group, the market share was as high as 31.9 percent.

If the winning streak of the German handball team continues as it has so far, the viewing figures are likely to skyrocket as well. In the third match, Germany will face France on Tuesday (16 January). This time, the broadcast will be taken over by ARD. The "Tatort", on the other hand, is currently making headlines with mass expulsions. Sources used:dwdl.de
