It's going to be slippery in Bavaria. Now the district of Freising is also reporting that there will be no face-to-face classes at schools on Wednesday.
The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued a severe weather warning for large parts of Germany: On Wednesday it will be slippery. Therefore, the Freising district office reported on Tuesday afternoon that there will be no face-to-face classes at the schools in the district on Wednesday.
Freezing rain in the district of Freising
An official severe weather warning for black ice is in effect for the district of Freising from Wednesday, January 17, at 5 a.m. to Thursday, January 18, at 6 p.m. "There is a high risk of slippery roads due to freezing rain and ice build-up. Initially, light snowfall, rapid transition to freezing rain," reports the DWD. Due to sudden freezing rain, there is a "danger to life and limb".
If you have to drive: fill up your tank and take warm drinks with you
The DWD therefore recommends avoiding spending time outdoors as much as possible. If you still have to drive from A to B, you should urgently adapt your behaviour in road traffic and be prepared for impairments on all traffic routes, up to and including closures/closures. In addition, the DWD advises to fill up the car if possible and to carry blankets and warm drinks with you.
"Coordination group plays it safe"
As a result of the black ice warning, there will be no face-to-face classes for pupils in the entire district of Freising on Wednesday. Robert Stangl, spokesman for the district office, writes: "The local weather coordination group has ordered distance learning." It is possible that not the entire district is affected by the weather situation. "But the coordination group is playing it safe and keeping all schools closed." The early decision gives schools and parents more time to plan and organize distance learning and childcare. Stangl continues: "Please also inform neighbors and acquaintances about this decision."
Freezing rain decision sparked criticism
The last time face-to-face classes were cancelled was at the beginning of December: freezing rain had turned the roads in the district into slides in places. At that time, the district office had not made a decision the day before, as it does now, but only in the early morning. Teachers and parents had to spontaneously reschedule. In many places, people relied on the lessons of the pandemic - i.e. digitalization in schools. But everyone agreed: the report from the district office had come too late.
