A two-month-old baby died at the weekend in a clinic in Neubrandenburg. Now the public prosecutor's office is investigating the 29-year-old father on urgent suspicion.

Neubrandenburg - After the death of a two-month-old baby in Neubrandenburg, the responsible local court has issued an arrest warrant against the 29-year-old father. "At the request of the Neubrandenburg public prosecutor's office, the district court in Neubrandenburg today issued an arrest warrant against the 29-year-old accused on the urgent suspicion of bodily injury resulting in death," said senior public prosecutor Beatrix Heuer. For the pre-trial detention, the accused is taken to the competent correctional facility.

"The investigation is still ongoing. Further information on individual investigation results is therefore not possible for investigative tactical reasons," it continued.

The background and motives for the crime are still unclear. The child had died at the weekend in the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Clinic in Neubrandenburg. The public prosecutor's office had begun investigations ex officio because there had been indications of third-party negligence. The cause of death was to be clarified, among other things, by an autopsy.

The district said that it was an ongoing investigation by the public prosecutor's office. Therefore, it is not possible to provide any further information about the family, for example whether the family was cared for by the Youth Welfare Office or whether there are other children. "As in the past, the Youth Welfare Office of the Mecklenburg Lake District does not provide any information on ongoing investigations," said Nils Carl Henke, press officer of the Mecklenburg Lake District district.

Four months ago, another case from the district had caused consternation nationwide. On September 14, 2023, a 14-year-old is said to have abused and stabbed 6-year-old Joel in a bush at the soccer field in Pragsdorf near Neubrandenburg. The suspect was arrested at the end of September. He had become entangled in contradictions, and his DNA trace was found on the murder knife.

At the beginning of January, the Neubrandenburg public prosecutor's office had brought charges against the 14-year-old suspect for manslaughter. The juvenile is in custody and, according to an expert opinion, is culpable. Nothing is yet known about a possible motive for the crime. The family's lawyer had said in October after a funeral service that the suspect had also attacked and injured Joel's 12-year-old brother before committing the violence. Dpa
