The Tegernsee Valley is currently showing its wintry side. Nevertheless, many cross-country ski trails have not been groomed recently. This surprised some. The responsible representative of the TTT clarifies.

Tegernsee Valley – The Tegernsee Valley is currently looking wintry – at least visually, the fresh snow recently made a promising impression. In order to feel the trails for cross-country skiers, however, the circulation is still too thin in many places at Lake Tegernsee. This is made clear by Christine Miller, who is in charge of cross-country skiing for Tegernseer Tal Tourismus GmbH (TTT).

Snow layer must be at least 30 centimetres

Dream weather and fresh powder snow: Some people wondered at the weekend why many cross-country ski trails at Lake Tegernsee were not groomed. "There's just not enough snow yet, we're not allowed to track," Miller explains when asked by the Tegernseer Zeitung. The minimum height of the snow must be 30 centimetres, as agreed with the property owners. "And that's what we're sticking to." After all, they are happy that there is a good understanding between the landowners and Tourismus GmbH.

Cross-country skiing commissioner hopes for quick supplies from above

In the end, Miller makes clear, the cross-country skiers decide on a case-by-case basis whether grooming is possible or not. Because not all snow is the same. The consistency must also be right so as not to damage the substrate. Wet snow can be compacted better than loose powder snow. In many areas, the grass is currently quickly peeking out again – "or you can run on stones after a short time," Miller, herself an experienced cross-country skier, points out. She hopes that supplies will now come quickly from above and that the snowfalls announced for this week will be more abundant than recently.

Cross-country ski trails in southern Kreuth, in Gmund and on the Sutten are groomed

Until then, however, fans of the narrow boards do not have to give up their sport. The cross-country ski trails between Wildbad Kreuth and Glashütte, for example, are groomed and in top condition, reports Miller. The same goes for the high-altitude circuit on the Sutten in Rottach-Egern. The Gassler and Oedberg circuits in Gmund as well as the cross-country ski trail in Waakirchen were also in operation recently.

Cross-country skiers also on unprepared routes

Where the tracking devices were not on the road, winter sports enthusiasts sometimes resort to self-help. In some cases, the cross-country skiers created their own tracks, such as in the area of the natural cheese dairy, where the popular Scharling-Oberhof sun trail normally runs. "People walk without grooming," Christine Miller said. Basically, there is nothing to be said against that. Of course, such routes are not comparable to a professionally designed track.

What happens next with the cross-country ski trails around Lake Tegernsee depends entirely on the weather in the coming days. Similar to the small ski resorts, the weakening winter had also caused a lot of problems for cross-country skiing during the Christmas holidays. "The rain had ruined everything," Miller said. That was bitter for the athletes. Now the focus is on the rest of the season.
