Munich – There is growing protest against the progressive radicalisation of the AfD. Over the weekend, rallies have already taken place in several German cities. Now a large demonstration against the right is also planned in Munich. The main initiator is the climate movement Fridays for Future, together with the alliance Munich is colorful.

Up to 20,000 participants: rally and demonstration march planned

The organizers are still in the coordination phase with the district administration department (KVR). However, it looks like the meeting will take place next Sunday at 14 p.m. in front of the Victory Gate. The KVR says: "Various locations have been requested, so we cannot yet say where the meeting will ultimately take place." A demonstration march is also planned, as well as a cultural program and speeches by prominent faces. According to reports, climate protection activist Luisa Neubauer will be on stage, among others. The organizers expect 10,000 to 20,000 participants.

According to Micky Wenngatz, the chairman of the association München ist bunt, the matter has picked up "a great momentum". More than 100 organizations currently want to participate in the call for a large demonstration. "And it's getting more by the minute." The protest should explicitly come from civil society and not from politics. However, the youth organisations of several parties are on board. Wenngatz says that developments in recent weeks have shown "that our democracy is indeed endangered."

Organizers: "Real climate protection needs democracy and cohesion in society"

Most recently, a secret meeting of AfD politicians and right-wing extremists became known, at which racist deportation plans were forged. Against the background that the AfD could become the strongest parliamentary group in some state parliaments, one can no longer speak of pure fantasy, warns Wenngatz.

Luc Ouali, who is instrumental in organizing the demonstration in Munich for Fridays for Future, also warns of a "general shift to the right in society," which is also dangerous for the concerns of the climate movement: "Real climate protection needs democracy and cohesion in society," says Ouali. The protest is directed against those "who want to divide society". According to Ouali, there is also broad support for the planned demonstration from representatives from the arts, culture and churches. (kv)
