The organizing committee of the next UN climate conference, COP29, to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan from 11 to 24 November, is made up of men only.
This was denounced by the eco-feminist NGO She Changes Climate, reports the Guardian.
The 28 members of the Committee, appointed by the Azerbaijani government, are all men: there are no women among them. Last year, at COP28 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 63% of the organising body was made up of women.
She Changes Climate writes: "This committee is a step backwards on the path towards gender equality on climate. But there is still time for change. We are calling for equal representation in the governance of this year's climate talks, because climate change affects the whole world, not half of it."
Almost all the members of the Azerbaijani COP29 organising committee are ministers or public officials, including the head of the security services and the head of the state-owned gas company.
For the second year in a row, the UN Climate Conference is being hosted by an oil state. The Chairman of the Committee, Mukhtar Babayev, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, worked for the State Petroleum Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) for 26 years.
