Former minister Amnon Rubinstein passed away today (Thursday).
Rubinstein, 92 years old at the time of his death, was a member of the Knesset and a minister in the governments of Israel.
He was a law professor and dean at Tel Aviv University and also taught at the Radziner Law School of Reichman University.
Rubinstein founded the Shinio movement after the Yom Kippur War.
Later, with Yigal Yedin, he founded the Dash party, which won 15 mandates in the 1977 elections. After he refused to enter the Begin government, Dash split.
In 1992, the Shinio party was merged with Retz and MPM and thus the Meretz party was established.

Rubinstein was one of the initiators of the Basic Human Rights Bill, from which four bills were split, including the Basic Law: Human Dignity and Freedom and the Basic Law: Freedom of Occupation.
Rubinstein served in the Knesset continuously until 2002 and, among other things, served as chairman of the Constitution Committee. In terms of his positions in the government, in the unity government in 1984 he served as Minister of Communications and in the Rabin government in 1992 he was appointed Minister of Science and Technology and Minister of Energy and Infrastructure. In the middle of the term he was appointed Minister of Education, Culture and Sports instead of Shulamit Aloni, a position he held until 1996. Among other things, he initiated the reform of the characteristics of the matriculation exams as well as the establishment of the academic colleges.
One of the most embarrassing events in the history of the Knesset was recorded when in 1999 the then Speaker of the Knesset Avraham (Avrom) Borg announced that Rubinstein had passed away.
It later turned out that it was a false message received by Borg Mazalman Shushi.
