A narrow council majority does not want asylum accommodation at Ziegelstadel in Markt Schwaben.

But there is no alternative location either.

Markt Schwaben –

A good 20 citizens wait patiently in front of the entrance to the council chamber in the Markt Schwaben town hall.

The plenary session is meeting inside this Thursday evening – secretly.

You can already tell from outside: people in the hall are apparently smoking.

But even after an hour in secret, and even more so after another hour in the subsequent public part of the meeting, the local elected officials cannot find a consensus.

It's about possible asylum accommodation on the street “Am Ziegelstadel”.

And about how we want to deal with the resistance, especially from the circle of direct residents in Burgerfeld (we have recently reported several times).

The Swabian municipal administration has already submitted three of its own suggestions via a table template in advance of the regular January meeting of the market town council.

Firstly: sticking to the recently rumored concept with a rental period for the Atron property of seven years with a maximum of 120 asylum seekers to be admitted.

Secondly: the complete rejection of the project or, thirdly, a kind of compromise, which Mayor Michael Stolze in particular, but also numerous other elected officials, consider to be entirely feasible: namely, to do everything possible to approve the location on the condition that “the number of people to be accommodated and the running time (in this order) should be reduced to a tolerable level.

Joint application from the CSU, FDP and the Free Voters

But the proposals are not even taken into account this Thursday evening.

Rather, the administration has received what is described as a “more far-reaching” application dated January 15th – including a recommendation for a resolution.

And it literally reads: “The market town council rejects the facility at this location (Am Ziegelstadel, Markt Schwaben).

At the same time, the market town council is actively committed to finding another location in the municipality.

When choosing a location, the needs of the community's citizens and the refugees to be accommodated must be taken into account.

When designing the accommodation, particular emphasis should be placed on sustainability (existing before new construction - possibility of subsequent use before demolition at the end of use, etc.).”

It is also said that the district office should be convinced to cancel the plans on the Atron site.

Furthermore, active action should be taken and everything should be done to reverse the existing contract and look for an alternative location that may have less impact on the citizens.

According to the signatories of the application, the two spokesmen for the CSU/FDP and the Free Voters, Heinrich Schmitt and Andreas Stolze, they are prepared to work constructively on a solution “that appropriately takes into account both the needs of the refugees and the interests of the residents “.

Promise to help you find an alternative location

This evening, the foundation was laid, so to speak, for an exchange of blows that even the often level-headed FW local councilor Markus Steffelbauer was unable to stop.

He warns his colleagues not to quibble and that there is a lack of mutual respect in the plenary session - at least this evening.

It is to be expected that people will accuse each other of populist tendencies.

On the matter itself, the CSU is demanding a roll-call vote.

Probably also to make sure that it works with the hoped-for wafer-thin majority.

At 1:10 p.m. she ends up voting for the community proposal.

Tension arises because two local councilors (Ronny Schreib and Raphael Brandes) are missing and ZMS man Wolfgang Korda agrees to the motion, although he previously left the opposite impression in the discussion.

The CSU, including FDP supporter Florian Delonge, are now voting for their own proposal, while the only party to the Free Party is Manfred Hoser, whose understandable argument some people no longer want to hear at this advanced point in time.

According to Hoser, you cannot seriously reject a location until you have actively searched for and found something new.

Two hours of lively debate in the market town council remained without consensus

Mayor Stolze's last efforts to promote his position also came to nothing.

80 people are currently being accommodated by the government in the market town, and coexistence is functioning perfectly and without incident.

That alone signals to the outside world that there is certainly some form of welcoming culture in Markt Schwaben, he says.

Stolze's point that even the district president considers the Ziegelstadel project to be feasible and reasonable does not lead to a change of direction.

Even the potential landlord has recently shown some willingness to talk, says Stolze.

But there is still a second vote on that day, not least at the insistence of the ZMS.

It is said that the local council should send the signal that refugees are generally welcome in the area and that everything will be done to accommodate them in a humane manner.

Where exactly remains unclear.

Vice Mayor Valentina Dahms stammers a little when asked about a possible alternative location, which also has residents.

Nothing is ready for a decision, answered town hall boss Stolze the day after when asked by the EZ.

He also knows that the greatest possible transparency must be created on this issue as quickly as possible so that what some people already fear does not happen: that a problem from Burgerfeld is simply relocated to another location.

And Stolze is already aware of the first rumors that have arisen: the (old) elementary school will be free in a few weeks.
