The community of Unterhaching is fighting for further local development despite the strained financial situation.

An overview of projects and plans this year.

Unterhaching

– What will happen in the community of Unterhaching, which now has over 27,000 inhabitants, in 2024?

In a detailed conversation with the Münchner Merkur, Mayor Wolfgang Panzer (SPD) and town hall spokesman Simon Hötzl provide an outlook - from construction projects to personal details to anniversaries.

Local development

The mayor names “mobility, sustainability and childcare” as short-term goals.

Local development planning is “a longer process” – in April Panzer is considering “the format of a meeting” for the 30 members of the local council in order to develop a consensus for Unterhaching.

Why only in April?

“Because the timetable stipulates that our budget will be in place in February and March - it also depends on where exactly the district sets the district levy.

For us it's a matter of up to two million euros or not.” How much voluntary additional services the municipality can finance: That won't be determined until spring.

No city status

In terms of population development, “around 2,000 people move in and 2,000 move away every year,” Panzer calculates.

A fluctuation with a slight upward trend; Unterhaching currently has 27,355 residents.

Because the eleventh construction phase is currently being completed on Stumpfwiese, the mayor expects the town to break the sound barrier of 28,000 inhabitants in 2025.

“I don’t want to develop Unterhaching beyond 30,000 residents,” says the town hall boss.

Although this is possible, the existing building law - he does not want to create new ones - would be exhausted through densification.

“But that would push our social infrastructure to the limit.” And to the question that has been asked for decades as to why such a large municipality does not apply for city status, the mayor says clearly: “A title without resources – it costs a lot and Unlike in the Middle Ages, it brings no added value today.”

mobility

The transport connections in Unterhaching are “fantastic”, says Panzer, and this year it’s “about refinements”.

For the express bus line X204 (from Putzbrunn to the Munich subway station Brudermühlstraße), the stop on Sommerstraße urgently needs to be expanded;

The Kubiz is also getting a new stop, even without the X-Bus.

Road expansion

The renovation of Lohestrasse is on the municipal agenda in 2024.

“It’s small, but not banal,” says Panzer – he speaks of “mobility under the magnifying glass.”

This connecting road will be unsealed and climatically optimized for the future: with fewer parking spaces.

At the same time, Geothermal Unterhaching is pushing ahead with the agreed full expansion - twelve road construction projects are planned for 2024, including on Andresenstrasse, Habichtstrasse and Karl-Mathes-Strasse.

energy transition

In addition to geothermal energy, the community is focusing on two other projects for climate-friendly energy production.

Together with the Bürgerenergie Unterhaching cooperative, another open-space photovoltaic system will be built by the end of 2024 (similar to the one on Ziegelweg directly on the A8).

The location: on Burgmaierweg (which is the extension of Finsinger Weg), between the bike park and the landscape park.

A PV system with 4,908 solar modules and 2,850 kilowatt peak output is planned on an area of 13,300 square meters.

As for a small wind farm with five to ten wind turbines in the Perlacher Forest: A joint venture with Taufkirchen, Oberhaching and Grünwald would operate this system.

According to Panzer, it is still unclear whether it will come at all - the Regional Planning Association has not classified the Perlacher Forest as one of the 22 priority areas in the greater Munich area.

childcare

“A long-running favorite,” says the town hall boss.

“We will need the Kubiz for the statutory full day from 2026.” For the students at the Jahnschule, he is concerned with “short distances, we need a 'Jahnstrasse comprehensive campus' for childcare.”

For ecological reasons, “existing buildings have to be used twice instead of sealing open spaces for new buildings”.

This year it is about “preparing a holistic system”.

Personal details

In Kubiz, the dismissal of Erdmute Albat, who led the open senior citizen work for 30 years, caused a lot of unrest and even led to signature collections by the older Unterhaching residents.

A successor has now been chosen: Carolin Sinemus, previously head of the “Health Region Plus” office in the Ebersberg district office, will take up her new management position in Unterhaching on March 1st.

Another, however, will quit on March 31st: home care worker Günter Staudter.

At the age of 82 and after exactly two decades of volunteer work, it was time to hand over the care of the home to someone younger.

The local council will take a position on this in March.

Hot candidate to succeed Staudter: Thomas Portenlänger, now retired former head of the municipality.

Business

The plans for the craftsman's farm, which has been in demand for what feels like an eternity, are becoming more concrete: the area north of the geothermal power plant on Grünwalder Weg is now being considered as a location.

“To do this, we have to expand the development plan this year and clarify the issue of green spaces with the government of Upper Bavaria,” explains Panzer.

Attentive experts in Unterhaching's south industrial area may have already noticed: At the roundabout between Aldi and McDonalds there is an unused branch to the north - this would be used to access the future craftsman's yard.

High school

The expansion of the Lise-Meitner-Gymnasium will begin in September and will become a major construction site for three years.

17 million euros are budgeted to create 17 new classrooms.

After the expansion, the LMGU will have seven rooms and offer space for 1,400 students.

Football stadium

In addition to SpVgg Unterhaching (football), the “Munich Ravens” (football) also caused a sensation as subtenants in the sports park in 2023.

The footballers want to play their home games in Unterhaching again this year.

The local council has the final say, Panzer expects “a Solomonic decision”.

Vacancy

Three prominent properties are lying idle in Unterhaching.

Firstly: the former Sport-Scheck office complex on Biberger Strasse has been there for two years.

“Unfortunately nothing is happening, neither in terms of sales nor rentals,” reports town hall spokesman Simon Hötzl.

The building is “exemplary of the great difficulties on the commercial real estate market”.

Secondly, the striking “Blumenhaus Ertl” closed in December after 51 years – what will happen to it?

Regarding the idea of locating the VHS there, Panzer says: “If we had money like a dime, we could afford this luxury.” Thirdly, the traditional “Kammerloher” restaurant, right by the maypole, also closed in November.

According to reports, the owners are now looking for new landlords.

“In any case, there was no termination for our local museum,” said Panzer.

Interesting: A few meters away, the Kammerloher owners are currently having the former Commerzbank building renovated.

What comes there: unclear.

Anniversaries and celebrations

The Unterhachinger Bürgerfest is taking place for the 50th time this year, and Andreas Krems is once again the festival host - he has a two-year contract.

As part of the community festival, the 45th anniversary of the town twinning with Le Vesinét (France) will also be celebrated.

And: The “Unterhaching Veterans and Reservists' Comradeship of 1874” is 150 years old - to mark the anniversary, a Marterl will be inaugurated at the entrance to the landscape park on June 30th, followed by a Kubiz parade.
