Memmingen - A senior citizen was the victim of a shock call on January 17, 2024 in Memmingen.
The Swabia South/West Police Headquarters registered the first successful crime of 2024 and points out that the fraudsters will continue to be active in the new year.
The act
The perpetrators, who have yet to be identified, called the woman on Tuesday (January 16, 2024), posed as local police officers and prosecutors and shocked her by telling her that her son had caused a fatal traffic accident and now had to be in custody.
By paying a high bail, she could save him from prison.
Since the strangers agreed to absolute secrecy with the injured party, the incident was not initially reported to the police.
The woman was deceived and, out of concern for her son, handed over a five-figure amount of cash to one of the unknown perpetrators.
The money was handed over on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, between 3 and 3:30 p.m. on the sidewalk at the intersection of Lupinstrasse and Feystrasse.
The pickup came from the direction of the city center and then went back there.
The questions from the police
The Memmingen criminal police are looking for eyewitnesses:
Who observed the meeting between an older woman, wearing a light blue jacket, and a man around 30 years old, around 175 centimeters tall, with dark hair, wearing a long, ocher-colored quilted coat?
The Memmingen criminal police will receive relevant information on 08331/100-0.
The numbers
Last year, officers registered more than 700 cases of this call center fraud within the police headquarters' jurisdiction. The perpetrators were successful in 21 cases and stole more than 850,000 euros.
The Lower Allgäu and the city of Memmingen accounted for more than 150 registered call attempts and eight successful cases.
In 2023, there was damage of more than 400,000 euros, almost half of the total registered loot.
In the current year, six attempted frauds have occurred in the police headquarters' area of responsibility, and the case mentioned here is the first successful one.
This caused damage in the low five-figure range.
