The geothermal energy project in Gelting is making progress.

A milestone has been reached with a vertical drilling depth of 4,500 meters.

The next challenge: the horizontal.

Gelting – Success report from the geothermal energy project in Gelting: The first vertical drillings have been completed.

At a depth of 4500 meters it now continues horizontally.

The goal: to generate electricity in the fourth quarter in the power plant that is currently being built in parallel on the former Hofgut Breitenbach.

Project is on schedule

“We have successfully completed the first two vertical drillings; they have reached the same depth,” reports Eavor press spokesman Alexander Land when asked by our newspaper.

Overall, everything went well and we are on schedule, assures Land.

The bits of the drilling rigs each worked their way vertically down 4,500 meters and thus reached the deepest point of the borehole.

“There was always a challenge,” said the company spokesman.

Sometimes the rock is harder.

“But that’s part of everyday business,” says Land.

The distraction is also complete.

What this means is a bend in the route - because from now on drilling will continue horizontally for around 3,400 meters.

Company from Wiesbaden supplies deep drilling cement

The vertical drill shaft was piped.

To stabilize the whole thing, the workers placed a special cement between the pipe and the rock.

The Dyckerhoff company supplies this deep drilling cement.

According to the company from Wiesbaden, around 1,400 tons were transported to the construction site in Geretsried last year.

The special mixture can be used for all borehole zones, “but is particularly suitable for use at great depths in borehole zones with high temperatures and pressures”.

The horizontal drilling section that is now to be completed will not be piped.

To ensure stability here, according to Land, a liquid medium developed by Eavor is used that essentially impregnates and solidifies the rock at the edge of the drilling hole.

Press spokesman Land also has good news on the subject of temperature: “We have come across the forecast temperatures.” Eavor had expected 160 degrees Celsius.

“The data material has proven to be very helpful,” the press spokesman reflects.

The current two geothermal drillings are not the first - the first attempts a few years ago under the leadership of the Enex company failed.

Prior to these drillings, the subsurface was extensively examined.

At that time the rock did not release the expected amount of thermal water, but was very hot.

And Eavor is now taking advantage of this.

Still 120 degrees on the surface - a “super good value”

As reported, the Canadian company wants to lay so-called loops underground in order to use geothermal energy in a closed system.

Eavor believes it will still be 120 degrees on the surface.

“This is a really good value that is interesting for district heating,” says Land.

Four of these heat loops are planned in Geretsried.

Twelve vertical holes are required for a loop.

In total, this makes a drilling distance of around 360 kilometers and around 90.6 kilometers per loop.

Power plant construction is also progressing

The construction of the power plant is also progressing as planned.

The concrete foundations have been set and the skeleton for the outer shell of the hall is currently being erected.

“We assume that we will be finished with this in the fourth quarter of this year,” announces the press spokesman.

The new and innovative technology that Eavor is using in Gelting is generating great political interest across the region.

Among the prominent guests who visited the drilling site near Gelting at the end of August last year were Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU).

The construction costs of the facility are estimated at 200 to 350 million euros.

The project is being supported by the European Commission with around 92 million euros from the European Innovation Fund EIF.
