The Minister of the Economy indicated on Wednesday that he was continuing his “reflection” on surrogacy (GPA) to which he was initially opposed. “I discuss it with them, I look, I observe, and we evolve,” he said, confirming that his friends’ baby, born abroad, was not recognized in France. Before him, the former Minister of Transport, Clément Beaune, had declared himself in favor of its “legalization”

Guest on the “Quotidien” show on Wednesday, the Minister of the Economy declared that he was continuing his “reflection” on GPA, after being touched by the story of “a couple of friends”.

Bruno Le Maire is not completely closing the door.

The Minister of the Economy indicated on Wednesday that he was continuing his

“reflection”

on surrogacy (GPA) to which he was initially opposed.

Questioned in the program “

Quotidien

” about the practice, banned in France, the number two in the government explained that he was initially

“deeply hostile to it for the reason of commodification of the body”

, while he was

“one of the rare in (his) political camp to defend homosexual marriage

.

The boss of Bercy finally revised his position, after being

“touched”

by the story of

“a couple of very close friends”

who “

have just had a child through surrogacy

”.

“I discuss it with them, I look, I observe, and we evolve,”

he said, confirming that his friends’ baby, born abroad, was not recognized in France.

“The main mindset when doing politics is openness, it’s never closing in on one’s certainties (otherwise) you have to move on to another profession

,” he continued.

Faced with the difficulties encountered by his loved ones, Bruno Le Maire now assures that he is trying

“to see what the expectations are behind (the GPA), the problems of principles that it poses, the ethical problems”.

Before him, the former Minister of Transport, Clément Beaune, had declared himself in favor of its

“legalization”

, but

“not in this legislature”

.

His comments were enough to irritate the Élysée, which was particularly resistant to the irruption of this divisive subject within the government.

The new Prime Minister, Gabriel Attal, for his part, suggested in 2019 that he would not be against an

“ethical”

surrogacy to have a child, if it were legal in France.

But Emmanuel Macron has so far always opposed this measure.

As for medically assisted procreation (PMA), Bruno Le Maire, who presents himself as

“married for 25 years, (having) four children, heterosexual”

, declared in particular to have

“evolved”

on the extent to which he was initially

“skeptical »

.

Asked more generally about the means to resolve the drop in birth rates facing France, the number two in the government for his part estimated that

“the key is to allow women to work with total equality between women and men. from which we are still far away

.
