The European Union made a decision to impose a sanctions regime on Hamas, with the first restrictions being imposed on six people involved in the financing of the terrorist organization, the Reuters news agency reports today (Friday).
"What we are doing now, and it will be done today and I think it will be announced in the next few hours, is that we have adopted a special sanctions regime on Hamas," an official in the Union told the Reuters news agency.
The official added that all six people on whom the sanctions were imposed are from Arab or African countries that are involved in the financing of the terrorist organization.

Against the backdrop of the decision, the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Joseph Borrell claimed today that the Israeli government's policy contributed to the strengthening of Hamas.
"Israel funded Hamas to weaken the Palestinian Authority," he claimed.
