2024-01-19T07:15:58.881Z

Highlights: Temperatures drop to -14°C in the north of France this Friday morning. Almost all of France remains on yellow alert (level 2 out of 4) for snow and ice. Roads made passable on Thursday with rising temperatures and sunshine may have finally frozen again overnight, without further freezing rain or snowfall having occurred. This constitutes a trap on the roads because the drivers have not been alerted by any visible element suggesting that the situation may have changed on the road. Next week, the situation will evolve in an impressive way. After a weekend where temperatures will gradually rise, particularly on Sunday, the thermometer will reach between 10°C and 15°C.

The threshold for very severe frosts has once again been reached in the north of France. Caution is advised on the roads.

The air assault of polar origin continues this Friday in part of France.

Very severe frosts, that is to say with a temperature below -10°C, occurred in the Hauts-de-France region.

For example in Calais, in the Pas-de-Calais department, the thermometer dropped to -14°C.

It reached this level a little before 7 a.m.

A little further south, in the Somme and in the Oise, the thermometer also locally fell below -10°C or has almost reached this threshold.

In Normandy, Seine-Maritime and Eure, -10°C was also approached and very occasionally reached.

As we approached the seaside, the temperature was a little higher, even positive.

In Île-de-France, Paris remained around 0°C, or with a slightly negative temperature.

As we move away from the center, the temperature drops lower and lower.

In the inner suburbs, it reached around -5°C;

In the greater suburbs, notably in Val-d'Oise, Yvelines and the south of Seine-et-Marne, temperatures of up to -7°C or -8°C have been recorded.

This Friday morning, almost all of France remains placed on yellow alert (level 2 out of 4) for snow and ice.

77 departments are concerned.

Only the southernmost part of the country is spared.

As a result, several departments have imposed traffic restrictions which remain in force.

This may involve a suspension of school buses, speed limits or a travel ban for heavy goods vehicles weighing more than 7.5 t.

One of the main risks is refreezing.

Roads made passable on Thursday with rising temperatures and sunshine during the day which caused a thaw may have finally frozen again overnight, without further freezing rain or snowfall having occurred.

This constitutes a trap on the roads because the drivers have not been alerted by any visible element suggesting that the situation may have changed on the road.

Next week, the situation will evolve in an impressive way.

After a weekend where temperatures will gradually rise, particularly on Sunday, the thermometer will reach at least between 10°C and 15°C in the afternoon everywhere in the country from Monday.

But this very clear rise in temperatures, which will then be between 5°C and nearly ten degrees above seasonal norms, will go hand in hand with regular rains.
