Extreme black ice and lots of snow are causing problems for drivers.

Especially on motorways in North Rhine-Westphalia, cars have been parked for miles - some since the night.

Munich - The weather warnings of the past few days were tough - and they didn't promise too much.

Amounts of snow caused some chaos in parts of Germany.

Streets and sidewalks were dangerously slippery.

Some schools remained closed or at least forewent face-to-face teaching.

No planes took off at Frankfurt Airport due to freezing rain.

The winter weather also slowed down rail traffic in parts of Germany.

Car journeys were sometimes discouraged, especially in the middle and south of Germany.

You can see why since Thursday night at the latest.

In the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia this mainly affects the A3, A4 and A61.

On the latter highway, traffic between Swisttal and Mendig is backed up for more than 50 kilometers.

As our partner portal 24rhein.de reports with reference to WDR information, you should plan around 45 minutes more time.

Further south towards Koblenz, there are also always major traffic jams, especially behind the state border with Rhineland-Palatinate.

Chaos caused by storms – people are stuck in snow traffic jams that stretch for kilometers

On the A4 towards Aachen there are 15 kilometers of traffic jams between Eschweiler-West and Aachen-Laurensberg.

According to WDR, several trucks have to be recovered there.

Drivers should allow around an hour and a half more time.

According to the picture, we are talking about 36 kilometers of traffic jams on the A3 in the morning.

The dpa reports 20 kilometers.

“Due to stationary trucks, cars can sometimes pass through, but it is actually still – let me put it cautiously – a bit chaotic,” said a police spokesman in Cologne, according to the report.

“It's easy to do.” Helpers use quads to get through to pregnant women, for example.

Fire brigade rescue workers secure an accident vehicle on the B 81 near Blankenburg (Saxony-Anhalt).

A serious traffic accident occurred at an intersection early this morning.

A seriously injured person involved in the accident was flown to a hospital by rescue helicopter.

Snow and slippery conditions cause long traffic jams on the A7 motorway in northern Hesse.

Since the night there has been no progress on the entire section between Guxhagen and Homberg-Efze, as a police spokesman announced on Thursday morning.

Drivers will be cared for on site.

It was unclear in the morning how long the traffic jam was.

Onset of winter in Germany: neighboring country no longer allows trucks in - school lessons are cancelled

In Rhineland-Palatinate, the Trier police reported a traffic jam on the A64 because the neighboring country of Luxembourg no longer allowed heavy traffic in - the trucks were backed up and were redirected to parking spaces.

The winter weather also caused problems for the border region in France.

There were accidents and traffic disruptions in Alsace and Lorraine, and trucks were banned from driving on main traffic axes.

Due to the traffic situation, schools remained closed in some places, for example in Darmstadt.

The city explained that they do not want to expose students to unnecessary health risks on the way to school and also reduce the volume of traffic in the city “in order to defuse the situation for the fire department, emergency services and hospitals.”

Weather chaos causes one death

A van driver was killed in an accident on a slippery road in the Eifel region on Wednesday.

The 34-year-old drove his vehicle off the road in a curve near Bauler (Rhineland-Palatinate) and crashed into a tree, the police in Bitburg said.

The man died at the scene of the accident.

With a view to extreme black ice, the German Weather Service (DWD) gave the all-clear on Wednesday evening.

“We can then look forward to widespread cold winter weather with sunshine at the weekend,” it said.
