German cities in the European ranking.
The northern metropolis not only shines in terms of quality of life, but also as a first-class place for work and family.
Brussels – The Hanseatic city of Bremen has a lot to offer with the Weser and its stadium, the Schnoorviertel and the town musicians.
However, when it comes to satisfaction, some European cities perform significantly better than others.
The recently published – and published annually since 2007 – report on “Quality of Life in European Cities” has a few surprises in store for the 2023 Europe-wide ranking.
The EU surveyed a total of 83 different cities in 36 countries - including Turkey, the United Kingdom and Switzerland.
A total of 73,153 people were asked about their satisfaction with their place of residence, their job and the respective air quality.
The cities surveyed in Germany included:
Munich
Berlin
Hamburg
Dortmund
Eat
Leipzig
Rostock
Interestingly, none of the metropolises of Munich, Berlin and Hamburg made it into the top 10 ranking of cities with the highest levels of satisfaction.

Satisfaction in cities: Two German cities are convincing
But that doesn't mean that Germany isn't represented in the top ten of the satisfaction rankings.
Because two German cities are at the top: Rostock and Leipzig.
Here people are particularly satisfied with their quality of life.
The people in Zurich are happiest.
The top 10 ranking at a glance:
Zurich (CH): 97 percent
Copenhagen (DK) 96 percent
Groningen (NL) 96 percent
Gdansk (PL) 95 percent
Leipzig (DE) 95 percent
Stockholm (SE) 95 percent
Geneva (CH) 95 percent
Rostock (DE) 94 percent
Cluj-Napoca (RO) 94 percent
Braga (PT) 94 percent
The citizens of the Sicilian capital Palermo were the least satisfied.
Only 62 percent said they were satisfied with their living conditions and the quality.
Before that, Istanbul and Athens share the penultimate place.

Leipzig and Rostock: leaders in a European comparison
The two cities Leipzig and Rostock were not only able to achieve top 10 placements in the “satisfaction” category.
The two cities also achieved above-average approval ratings in the “Good place to live for families with small children” category.
Leipzig comes in fourth place with 95 percent, Rostock in sixth place with 93 percent.
It should be noted that these positive values of the Hanseatic city are by no means limited to a specific target group or generation.
Rostock comes in second place in the “Good Places to Live for Older People” ranking, directly behind Zurich
Hamburg, Berlin and Munich: major German cities score points
Munich occupies fourth place in the top 10 ranking in the category “Good places to live for LGBTIQ people” and is therefore the only German city to be represented.
The leaders here are Zurich, Reykjavik and Copenhagen.
Munich is also listed in the top 10, along with Hamburg, when it comes to how easy it is to find a job.
The northern metropolis of Hamburg scores highly when asked: “The city is a good place to live for immigrants from other countries”.
Here the Hanseatic city takes seventh place with an approval rating of 87 percent.
In addition, Hamburg ends up in the top 10 with Berlin, Dortmund and Rostock again in the “job satisfaction” category, with Rostock in place, mind you.
In other words: Nowhere in Europe are people as satisfied with their job as in Rostock.
But: In Schleswig-Holstein the people are more than happy.
Even though many Germans would currently like to emigrate.
