Several thousand people took part in a protest against right-wing extremism in Erfurt.
An alliance called for this under the motto “Never again is now”.
On Saturday, young and older people, as well as many families with children, met on Cathedral Square, the largest square in the Thuringian state capital, to take a stand against right-wing extremist tendencies in society.
Erfurt - The police spoke of around 9,000 participants in Erfurt, the organizers of more than 10,000.
“We cannot remain silent about deportation plans for migrants and right-wing ideology,” said a spokeswoman for the alliance.
It's about an anti-fascist, solidarity-based and cosmopolitan Thuringia.
Participants held up banners with slogans such as “Never again fascism,” “Social policy instead of nationalism,” and “For a society based on solidarity!”
Against Nazis and Racists” or “Stop the AfD”.
Following the rally, according to police, a 1.5 kilometer long demonstration marched through Erfurt's city center.
According to police, there were no significant disturbances.
This week, there were similar demonstrations in Gera and Jena, among others, with several thousand participants, as well as in a number of other German cities.
They are a reaction to the well-known meeting of radical right-wing circles with AfD officials and a leading head of the right-wing extremist Identitarian Movement in Potsdam.
Since the meeting became known, which also discussed plans for the mass expulsion of migrants, demonstrations against the AfD have taken place in numerous cities in Germany.
