As a former inmate in the Utaa prison, employed by Tecnocasic, the company that deals with waste disposal in the metropolitan city of Cagliari: a new opportunity for life thanks to the "Lav(or)ando" project of the Elan social cooperative.

The new year brings a seven-month contract for StefanoGarau, a 60-year-old former entrepreneur from Cagliari.

The hiring is the result of a long journey that began with the project supported by the Foundation with the South, created to encourage social reintegration and offer an opportunity for redemption.

Elan manages the two industrial laundries in Uta and the Quartucciu juvenile institute.

During his detention, Garau was able to carry out his first internship there supported by the operators: "To obtain these results, teamwork and a dense network of public and private companies ready to promptly offer their support is essential - explains Elenia Carrus, vice-president and head of the inclusion area of Elan -. We want to further expand this network of partners sensitive to the issue of socio-work inclusion of detained people. We are happy for Stefano. His great determination and commitment are an inspiring example and is the demonstration that work is a concrete opportunity for redemption".

Having served his sentence, Garau had carried out a new internship at Tecnocasic, a company that joined the project, obtaining the ethical solidarity label "Working 100% social inclusion" created by Elan.

Now, with the employment contract, from Monday 15 January, Garau occupies the front office position, receives staff and visitors, answers the phone: "I received a truly extraordinary welcome from everyone, they moved me - says Garau - I found myself happy from one day to the next. I would like to thank everyone, in particular GiacomoLoche who was initially my tutor and now a true and great friend".

At the same time, Elan's commitment continues and the opportunities for the cooperative are growing.

Last week the new tender announced by the State Police was won.

Sheets, blankets, pillowcases and towels from the accommodation and security cells of the Carlo Alberto barracks in Viale Buoncammino and the Cagliari Police Headquarters will be washed and ironed by the inmates: "The workload increases for us and consequently the opportunities to involve other inmates in the inclusion process increase " concludes Carrus.
