Copenhagen – The runestones of Jelling, a small town near Vejle in East Jutland, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

They tell of the legendary Harald Bluetooth, the first king of a united Denmark more than 1,000 years ago.

Today's Queen Margrethe II (83) also descends from Harald Bluetooth - and she has numerous relatives.

Surprised and delighted, Frederik X and Mary are welcomed to the throne after Margrethe II

On January 14, 1972, at the age of 31, Queen Margrethe II took over the throne from the late King Frederik IX.

(72, † 1972).

But then something happens that no one expected and that is almost unique in Danish history: Margrethe II, the world's longest-serving monarch, abdicates the throne on January 14, 2024 in favor of her son Frederik.

Their son Frederik X. (55) and his wife Mary (51) take over the reins.

Harald Bluetooth is a thing of the past, but who else is there?

We present the Danish royal family on the occasion of the coronation.
