Storm warning on the Atlantic coast and in all fishing ports, from Audierne (Finistère) to Saint-Jean-de-Luz (Pyrénées-Atlantiques).
From this Monday, January 22 until February 20, fishing is now prohibited in the Bay of Biscay for all boats of eight meters or more equipped with certain models of nets.
More than 450 vessels will remain at the quay, including gillnetters, pelagic trawlers and bolinchers – the latter use a rotating net, the bolinche, to catch sardines and horse mackerel.
At the origin of this unprecedented “
spatio-temporal ban
”: a decision by the Council of State aimed at protecting dolphins and porpoises.
There are more than 200,000 of these small cetaceans living in the Bay of Biscay.
Between 5,000 and 10,000 of them are accidentally captured each year by fishermen.
