The series "American Nightmare" took the first place on Netflix in the last few days, with a story so far-fetched that even the best suspense writers could not come up with. How did it happen that a seemingly simple crime turned into a never-ending saga of mistakes?

At the end of the week, a new documentary mini-series called "An American Nightmare" took over the top of the list of the most watched series on Netflix Israel and other countries, which includes interviews and dramatic illustrative segments about a real case that happened in the USA in 2015. This shockingly strange case raises quite a few questions - including Is the whole story even true? We enlisted the help of Claude to try to learn a little about what really happened - or didn't happen - to the photogenic American couple almost a decade ago.

The three episodes of the new series gradually introduce a saga full of strange twists that even writers like Harlan Cuban would have difficulty inventing: "An American Nightmare" begins with the kidnapping of Denise Hoskins from her bedroom, when a burglar entered her and her partner's house, Aron Quinn, drugged them, Kevin, kidnapped Hoskins and sent Kevin a ransom demand.

Kevin debated what to do, but finally decided to report the crime to the police - but the police did not believe him and accused him of murdering his partner.

However, two days later, Hoskins appeared 640 km away, unharmed but traumatized. Instead of investigating the circumstances of the case, the police immediately concluded that the two couples were liars, and publicly accused them of the kidnapping and the ransom demand.

At this point there were two more twists in the story: First, the real kidnapper sent an email to the newspaper with details about the crime, and demanded that the police clear Hoskins' name.

Then, months later, authorities arrested former Navy SEAL Matthew Mueller for an unrelated burglary, but soon linked him to Hoskins' attack.

In the end, the couple sued the police and the city for negligence, but the police agreed to apologize only privately, without publicly admitting the mistake.

It wasn't until 2021 that the Velho police issued a public statement in which they expressed regret for their treatment of the victims.

Today, Hoskins and Quinn are married and raising two daughters.

However, they still bear the scars of the strange crime and the harsh response that turned their lives into an "American-style nightmare."

One of the goals of the new series is to help the couple to achieve closure, and along the way perhaps also to hint to the public that those who are publicly presented as guilty are not always guilty.
