- On Christmas Eve, the sailing boat became self-employed during a storm, drifted across Lake Starnberg without an owner and ended up stranded on the shore around the level of the Buchscharner Seewirt.

It lay there for three weeks.

Now the Wolfratshauser water rescue service has recovered a private owner's sailboat.

The volunteers look back on a difficult mission.

The mission was harder than expected

A few days ago, eleven comrades moved out to tow the runaway.

Two boats and a water rescue vehicle were in action, as Christian Winklmeier reported to our newspaper.

They were also necessary: “Two boats have around 250 hp – and we needed that to lift the sailboat.” It weighs 1.5 to 1.8 tons.

“It was a technical assistance from the high school.” Because the water at that location is not very deep, “maybe 50 centimeters,” the operation was much more difficult than one would think at first glance.

Because the keel was buried a good meter deep in the ground.

The swell of the past three weeks was to blame for this.

“As a result, the boat was repeatedly lifted and pushed deeper into the ground,” explains operations manager Winklmeier.

Part of the keel had already broken off.

Volunteers tow the boat three kilometers across the lake

At around 12 noon, the volunteers started their second rescue attempt.

The successful operation only ended at 6 p.m.

The water rescue service had already tried to salvage the boat for the first time on Christmas Eve, despite the strong wind.

“Back then we had to admit defeat,” remembers Winklmeier.

This time it worked despite the bitter cold.

The water rescue service's central tasks are rescuing people, "but we also regularly provide technical assistance like this," explains the operations manager.

The emergency services towed the sailboat to Bernried – about three kilometers across the lake.
